Title: Revised Reverse engineering
Post by: sauron on April 13, 2014, 05:52:26 AM
I would like to see Reverse Engineering being usable on regular modules too...
why not combine 2 Mk III MAU units in one MK VI unit?

:21: that is a good idea.  :wow: It well save alot of time to upgrade modules.

But wouldn't that bork the whole research system if you could make higher mk modules without researching MAU tech etc.?

I guess we could set some limit or something to deal with that perhaps.

I agrees with JoolzVern. we just reuse the reverse engineering system.

only can be done if your has research over the level for combining the two modules as one.
(modules #1 level C combine modules #2 level L to CL modules.) if you do not has research
over level CL it will not combine. Also time set for combining modules together.

I guess the problem would be that you only need to get a high level of reverse engineering; you could ignore all the other science trees.  Combine 2 mkL engines into a mkC, then combine those two engines into a mkCC.  Do this again and again.  All you'd need is the reverse engineering, you wouldn't have to research the rest of the tree.

Yes, I think lisunken has it right- it might work so long as you have the resulting module already researched.

Still it could throw the balance off a bit so maybe it should I don't know, require you put up some extra materials or something.

It might work... but you'll need both the science level and the reverse engineering level, like this:

MAU Mk I + MAU Mk I = MAK Mk II, will require Rev. Eng. Level 2 and MAU Level 2

Also it will need to require 3h time for each mark over the higher module, so if you upgrade an Mk IX with an Mk V, then it will take 5*3 = 15 h to complete.

You guys are right, I overlooked the tech tree becoming obsolete.
But as said, it might work if you need both of the tech's.
Even then it would be an asset. When you raid a planet and capture 10 useless Mk1 science labs, at least you could make 1 Mk10  science lab out of it.

So true. I has too many mining modules in level 1. It take forever to upgrade and resell back in sol is no profits at all.

That would be cool- I could more easily consolidate my hundreds(?) of 'useless' labs onto one research vessel lol.

I think that'd definitely be worthwhile.  It'd also allow you to upgrade modules in your manufacturing bay, and then cannabilise your old modules into a single higher mark module.  It also makes sense from a narrative standpoint; I can just imagine my mad scientist engineer pointing at the guts of my old WHG and saying Eureka! before ripping it apart to combine it with another engine.

Yep a needed update provided, as Sir Emi points out, it complies with your reverse engineering science AND your particular module science you are reverse engineering.
I have hundreds of modules that are stowed away for "upgrading" that you never get around to because of the need for more mats spent on them. It would be easier to combine then and consolidate for sure. Only cost would be time and manufacture bays
