Title: Nav Comp Idea
Post by: kagewolfe on November 08, 2012, 09:11:34 PM
The idea is saved jump calculations between the same two points? Like SOL and SIRIUS or EARTH and MARS. To cut down on the new jump calculations.

You mean like saving a route for trade routes and stuff, that could be nice.

There will be more trade stations soon, so it could be useful :)

I like this idea as well. There is no reason the nav computer couldn't remember certain calculations making  it easier to calculate to the location. Trade routes would be great in particular.  I am sure pirates would love them as well. lol

they are using quantum computers and persistent quantum memory is too expensive.

Not exactly a legit excuse since there are computers this day and age that could do such a thing. Especially the super computers out there. All it needs is to remember the calculations from point a to point b.

lets assume that computations needed to establish a wormhole are beyond the power of conventional computers and quantum computers must be used with no persistent memory

but i would like to see stationary wormholes (similar to stations) that would allow instant travel. the owner would need to provide it with fuel and could define a toll.

ever since the 'big bang', the universe haas been expanding.  That means every thing is moving away from everywhere.  The computations are not the same each time you start them up.

(unless you don't mind ending up in the belly of the star...)

It's true it is expanding. But we don't know the rate star systems might be pulled out with it.  The calculations for the most part would be the same in the short period of time things are going on in the game.  It is like in the show stargate sg1.  After all them centuries the planets shifted and using the Earth based systems for the calculations, calculations had to be altered a little bit.  So the quantum computers would only need some minor calculation alteration to account for spacial drift.  These computers should at least be able to handle it. Especially for shorter jumps.  I know these computers might not be as elaborate as those found in Star Wars. But even the Falcon only needed a few minutes for the calculations to be made for a jump into hyperspace. This is course assuming they had all galactic map info already programmed into their computers.

Random unstable wormholes is a feature that will be added. The wormholes will open and close, facilitating travel between great distances and taking shortcuts. Of course those need to be explored first by sending a ship into it. A timer will show how much time before the unstable wormhole closes, but will last for 10 days+.
