Not sure if it's supposed to work like this but...

"- COMbat missions / signals: Can be the most profitable, but require decently equipped ship for combat. The mission difficulty depends on the combat ship used. At higher difficulty it becomes increasingly more difficult and challenging."

I picked up a COM mission with my 40,000+ attack power ship, and ended up facing 2 pirates with a combined total of 1,430,000+ attack power. Needless to say, my cargo did not get their ship back...heh.

This isn't a bug.  Both pirates count towards being the same person. I actually did 2 COM missions at once at the same planet in small system before dodging was added in.  I barely scrapped up a victory then. If this other pirate wasn't one of yours, it was likely one someone else was doing and they failed at it so it was still sitting there when you got there.

that is a good reason to check out what is in orbit before you resolve the com...

Well, I just had them send me the coordinates, I saw the 0 to 344 odds, and moved along...

Ah yes, you might have picked up a stray pirate from another mission  :)) if that happens they will join forces.

If you can't win that fight, might as well retreat :)
