Title: mysterious encounters
Post by: sargas on July 22, 2014, 03:30:37 PM
I found the first Safety Override and Dadds found the first Crematorium (in that order).

first, sign in and we will determine the stakes.

1. first to discover (FtD)New Star Cluster

2.  FtD Space monsters

3. FtD alien civilization

4  FtD alien relic

5.  the first to bring home an unknown mineral or gas

6.  FtD 'rogue' planet/stellar system

there are 1 day 17 hour until the update is ready...

(edit - I propose that all participants dedicate 1 QP in each of the above categories and pay that QP to the first to discover it.  and so on with each category thereafter)

Like I told elsewhere, I am part of the race. I have been waiting for it since so long!

You are ready for the race yes, but are you ready to wager?

(edit - Will all y'all please go back and read the previous edit up-there ^)

Did you miss a zero or is it really only 1 QP for each category?

Count me in.  :shifty

Title: Re: mysterious encounters
Post by: sargas on July 22, 2014, 09:17:34 PM
I do not miss zeros, we can adjust the amount before the 'kick-off'.

that is one QP for each of 5 categories.
multiply with how many is in the pool (at this time, we are 5) ... (with ten entries, the winner will get 10 QP - his own and 9 others)...

I thought that more than 1 QP could be hard to scrape up for some captains.  I would prefer a buy in of 10 QP per category myself...

...(side bets are always in order)...

Title: Re: mysterious encounters
Post by: lisunken on July 22, 2014, 09:20:47 PM
lol side bets.  :sweat  Ok  are you going hold the QP?

Title: Re: mysterious encounters
Post by: Matamaure001 on July 22, 2014, 09:30:13 PM
OK to bet

Title: Re: mysterious encounters
Post by: sargas on July 22, 2014, 09:34:35 PM
What?  Are you offering to send me QP and want me to just put it my pocket?  That will not work (trust issues could raise it's ugly head), and I will not accept that responsibility.

We are honorable people here and we can be trusted to pay when someone wins.

Punitive damages can be assessed if there are any "welcher's" (2X - 3X - or more, depending upon circumstances).  And, welching on a bet will be posted through-out the forum...

Just let it be known (non-payment) to this forum and the Galactic Gaming Commission (all who place wagers here become members of the 'Gaming Commission") will investigate.

lol side bets.  :sweat  Ok  are you going hold the QP?

side bets need to be posted here in the 'GAME ROOM', or the (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v192/sargas37/pimp.gif) GC (Gaming Commission)(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v192/sargas37/pimp.gif)is powerless.

You do not have to participate in any category...You can bet cat. 1, 3, 4 and not do 2 or 5 etc, etc, etc...

I can do the math...

Title: Re: mysterious encounters

Oh, and we are now 5...

Title: Re: mysterious encounters

I will take a friendly bet :) for nothing more than bragging rights.

Title: Re: mysterious encounters

I thought that more than 1 QP could be hard to scrape up for some captains.  I would prefer a buy in of 10 QP per category myself...

Well, those captains who will find it hard to scrape 1 QP for each category shouldn't be joining in the first place. The fuel cost alone will be huge for them.

I'd say officially make it at least 10 QPs for each category, or just no QPs and just bragging rights. LOL

Title: Re: mysterious encounters
Post by: sargas on July 22, 2014, 11:59:01 PM
I'm good with 10 per...

Title: Re: mysterious encounters
Post by: sargas on July 23, 2014, 12:18:36 AM
...if I have to, I will adjust the winnings with how much you are willing to bet.

I mean you cannot expect to win the same amount by betting 1 as you would if you wagered 10...

I need to find out how I can deal with the 'excess' in the winnings.  (perhaps in a fund for a future bet)...

No, instead, the 'excess' winnings do not need to be paid.  Your losing bet does, however.  If you bet 1 and win, all who also bet would only have to pay you 1;  with the excess staying in their pocket.  If you lose, you pay the 1.

So, I guess you can call me 'The Gaming Commissioner'...

I will be fair...

I will take a friendly bet :) for nothing more than bragging rights.

I'll send you 5 from petty cash...use them for a 1QP bet in each category...

...(Oh, crap, the EoS doesn't have taxes...Neither does SSS...

...pay back the 5 when as soon as you can (before anything else)...

let me know before kickoff...

add in my 10 QP and we are three with a 'pot' of 30 QP per category.

@Dadds, who is going to enforce a silly a$$ law like that out here in the great empty?  Feel free to add your QP to any (or all) the above categories.  :12:

Title: Re: mysterious encounters

True, you indeed are probably the most online player throughout the day. How about you still join? I will cover the 50 QPs for you, and i will provide one WHG mk CCC for your ship. :)

Title: Re: mysterious encounters

5, that makes the pot 50 each...

I believe Sir Emi will announce them first; he did so when Dadds and I found the pirate illegal mods.

1. first to discover (FtD)New Star Cluster

just wanna make it clear, you mean star cluster like ours, right? not star pockets.

How about you make a separate bet for star pockets?  :)

Also, I suggest photographic evidence be supplied to this thread. Feel free to censor out the coordinates of things you want to keep private though :) (e.g. star clusters)

Indeed. A pic is needed, and the time stamp on the forum decides who got it first. Edited posts will not count.

We gotta make rules to avoid disputes. :)

I feel they are synonymous, how do you see a difference?

Sir Emi reported when Dadds and I were the first to discover the 2 'ilegal' mods.  If he does so here, his word is binding.  Otherwise a screenshot of proof will be needed.

5.  the first to bring home an unknown mineral or gas

Just to clarify... Do you mean ACTUALLY bring the material back to Sol? Or just find it?....
Bringing it all the way back would mean taking a trip all the way out just to come all the way back to MAYBE be the first one... If we are bringing it all the way back then I would like to retract my entrance into that category.

But if we are just surveying or collecting the new material then count me in! :)

Title: Re: mysterious encounters

I feel they are synonymous, how do you see a difference?

There is a difference. From what I understand, there will be four big groups of stars like ours, and smaller pockets of stars (or hermit stars).

I was thinking that because we will not know the value of the unknown, we need to bring it back.  But, I can see how the discovery can be enough to trigger the reward (the first unknown to be discovered, and not each)

There is a difference. From what I understand, there will be four big groups of stars like ours, and smaller pockets of stars (or hermit stars).

I think the hermit stars will be individual, isolated stars with abnormal features and events. I was expecting a category for them as well :)

Title: Re: mysterious encounters
Post by: sargas on July 25, 2014, 12:55:06 AM
we can do that, add 'rogue' systems (or planets) to the pool.  SirEmi said they will be there as well as the monsters.

I wager another 10 for category 6...

Title: Re: mysterious encounters

There is a difference. From what I understand, there will be four big groups of stars like ours1, and smaller pockets of stars (or hermit stars).

1I don't remember that there would be only 4.  I only remember that there are other stellar groupings out there.  There are more clusters available (if 4 found on ring 25, then 25+ may be found on ring 50 etc. etc. etc. ad infinitum...)

and what do you consider a smaller pocket?  How many systems?

for now, let us say that a cluster must contain more than 1 sector...

one sector (or less) becomes a rogue sector (and qualifies for category 6).

Title: Re: mysterious encounters
Post by: Rostin on July 25, 2014, 10:49:01 AM
I believe the hermit stars will be isolated and will only be single stars. Clusters/pockets will be very noticeable in size and on the thread for the project itself Emi said there would probably be 4 at first.

If Raphael goes in for the new category I will as well. I don't really care...

Title: Re: mysterious encounters
Post by: raphael on July 25, 2014, 11:26:12 AM
Yes, we are in for category 6.  :)

And about the new mineral/gas, for simplicity's sake, I'd like it to be just who finds it first. No need to bring it back.

With the current rescheduled release time for the update I will probably be asleep when it's finally finished, and then I'll be at work the next day, so if it doesn't change considerably in the next day or so I would like to retract my bet... There will be no way for me to be watching my ship for about 17 hours after release...

And sargas, I can't really tell you since we are in a race, aren't we? I fulfilled the requirements of posting a pic, so that should be enough for now. :)

Congratulations

Post by: lisunken on July 29, 2014, 06:04:54 PM
Hold on. Are E testing this update before a full blow one. If this a test the find do not count.  To my upstanding you need the wormhole detector to find it. So not so fast

Title: Re: mysterious encounters
Post by: sargas on July 29, 2014, 06:30:47 PM
there are wormholes now.  the one between Tau Ceti and Epsilon Eridani goes to sector 5,3.  It's there, it works.  Other wormholes are out there also.  They seem to be stable.  There are others.  Rafe won because he was the first.  If you can prove any of the systems in his report are false, you can repudiate them here.  As of now, Rafe won this one.

Title: Re: mysterious encounters
Post by: Rostin on July 29, 2014, 06:43:10 PM
lisunken; Raphael found the first star cluster. The wormholes are not one of the categories and even if they were they would be immediately thrown out because they took absolutely no effort to find or use. Star clusters seem to have been fully implemented as of today, and anyone can find the clusters. I do not know how many Sir Emi has implemented so far, but it looks like he's not giving out any spoilers, only watching in game messages and corp boards for when to announce what the "explorers" discover. :)

I do not know how many Sir Emi has implemented so far, but it looks like he's not giving out any spoilers, only watching in game messages and corp boards for when to announce what the "explorers" discover. :)

So, you have been given important information here (AND I AM NOT GONNA TELL YA WHAT IT IS)...

I'll see you out there...

With the current rescheduled release time for the update I will probably be asleep when it's finally finished, and then I'll be at work the next day, so if it doesn't change considerably in the next day or so I would like to retract my bet... There will be no way for me to be watching my ship for about 17 hours after release...

tell me about it, I went to Seattle for the weekend to see a baseball game and came back to see that not only did Dadds and Jake hit me, but my Blood Lily bloomed (beautiful freakin' flower - google it)...

my Xinloi did revisit Jake's Lucien...giggle...

Yes, we are in for category 6.  :)

And about the new mineral/gas, for simplicity's sake, I'd like it to be just who finds it first. No need to bring it back.

if you don't bring it back, we will not know what it is..

3.  alien civilization, no.  not unless there are living survivors on the crashed ship who are willing to take you to their home.  It's the civilization and not the citizens that will determine this category.

4.  Being that this is the first reported case, the discovery of an alien artifact is valid.

An arachnid hive does not have to be a civilization. Earth creatures will form hives (may even have a hive intelligence) but are not civilized.

I'm going to need more information to prove civilization.

It could be 'space monster' instead.

Well to be technical it says it's a hive (and a level 5 structure- could refer to size) but that doesn't necessarily mean advanced... I mean not far where I am, there was this::

http://www.texasento.net/Social_Spider.htm

This was a 200-yard spider-web. Now I don't know if that qualifies as level 5, but if so, I think it still doesn't qualify as a civilization :D

Considering we can't even be sure of how strong they are at the moment it is hard to say there are more advanced. I wouldn't be surprised if many of our own tech we have in the game is more powerful then this stuff we are finding.

no, but insects and other vermin can take over empty buildings.

You will have to show proof that these 'spiders' are capable of that sort of engineering.

You did attack, didn't you?

You did discover this first, all I am saying is if others also find 'arachnid nests' it will go a long way to proving it as a civilization.

It's either a 'civilization' or a 'space monster'.  Either way you are first.

We don't crash land, so something we have is superior to them (maybe their ship don't have the same 'jump-out-of-here-to-the-safe-spot' safety feature as we do).

Rafe was the first to discover something!

#2 'Space Monster' or #3 'Alien Civilization'.

We need to determine which is correct before we can award the title.  I read 'monster' and 'civilization' to be exclusive of each other.

Sir Emi has stated that space monsters will be incorporated deliberately in a future upgrade. I do not think "Alien Civilizations" will progress more than the simple ruins and structures left behind by a now extinct or long departed species that we have discovered thus far.

So I've just encountered a large alien structure, something that requires 8 million RPs and 8 days to excavate. As you all know, I'm a wee bit small, and that's a price too steep to pay at the moment. So instead, I thought I would see if anyone else is interested in buying the location of the structure from me. You get quadrant, planet, and of course my promise not to tell anyone else where it is.

It is clear they are aliens but that doesn't make them a sentient species.  For all we know this is just some sort of space infestation and not actually a sentient race of beings defending their homes. Remember even primitive animals will defend themselves when they feel they are threatened.

Yep.  That said if we could confirm perhaps that maybe these are like the Buggers in the Ender Series (start with Ender's Game. Great book series" then we could say they are sentient.  But as it stands now there just isn't enough information to confirm if they are in fact a civilization or even sentient.

Sauron, I have one of those too, Mk II. I'm tiny, and for me it's equal to like... 1.5 of my science labs. If there were a way to upgrade them, they might ultimately be worth it. They would scale like 1000% better than regular science labs. But as is, pretty disappointed in the alien research lab.

1. first to discover (FtD)New Star Cluster  (won by Raphael)

2.  FtD Space monsters

3.  FtD alien civilization

4  FtD alien relic (won by Raphael)

5.  FtD an unknown mineral or gas

6.  FtD 'rogue' planet/stellar system (won by Raphael)

(edit - because...

...dadgummit, I'm old...

I forgot this:

participants:
sargas
lisunken
raphael
Matamaure001

if Rostin (or any other Captain) wishes to enter the rest of the wagering, let them announce it here before my personal birthday.

besides, it's pretty now...)

Since QP have become a lot more expensive, shall we renegotiate the wager and substitute 10AP for 10QP?
