Title: A proper in-game date system
Post by: Madden on June 30, 2015, 06:56:20 AM
I was thinking about making a sort of "history" of Astro Galaxy based on old forum archives and interviews with veteran players, when I realized that this would be kinda difficult due to the fact that we don't have an in-game time system.

Especially since this game is meant to take place around a hundred years from now, it would be ridiculous to put the year "2015" anywhere in the forums.

I think implementing a time system would be a great benefit to creating a proper history of Astro Galaxy, as well as prevent confusion among members when something related to time is mentioned.

I suggest using that we just follow a solar calendar that is a hundred years ahead. I think it will be quite easy to include this feature in the game.

A retroactive calendar change ... Galactic Year (GY)1 begins with SOL corp discovering wormhole technology. So today becomes June 30, GY4 @ 18:37 UTC

(edit because - ...it's expected...)

Seconded. (Not just because he's my Emperor ... it's mostly because '1' seems like a pretty good place to start. lol)

Thirded. (Is there such a word)?  L:)

Its also quite simple and easy to understand. Its amazing that the game has been running for four years now.....

Yes, let's make the same mistake as Terra's dominant calendar and not have a year zero :(

I once created the Heliocentric Yurian Date system (☉ЮD), a word play on the Julian Date system astronomers use, and named after Yuri Gagarin, who requires no further introduction. It is a simple decimal system that counts the number of seconds elapsed since 00:00 UTC on April 12, 1961, corrected by the ~ 8m20s OWLT to the Sun at that moment, to make it a solar-centred clock.

On that clock 1,710,997,312 seconds have passed at the time of typing this. A Yurian "day" has 100,000 seconds, the ☉ЮD is thus 17109.97312 (in Star Trek tradition it could be referred to as "Stardate 17109.9"). This makes a Yurian Day slightly longer than a Terran one (100,000 seconds v 86,400), 27.777 hours. In the blackness of space, that wouldn't matter. I, for one, would actually love to have a few extra hours for my "daily" routines :D

 You create the Heliocentric Yurian Date system? Wow. Impressive.

But I personally think that Sargas's idea is the best. Simple, easy to understand and also easy to calculate xD

4 years is a guestimate. I'm Captain #572 and have been active in the forum since November 19, 2012, 11:26:06 PM

Astro Galaxy started September 02, 2011, 11:39:40 AM according to the forum message.

(do I really have to explain why I edited this time?  standard catagory A)

Well, now I don't really support Galactic Year system anymore. Because Galactic Years actually refer to the duration it takes for the Sun to orbit the centre of the Milky Way once....which is around 230 million years. :/ We don't live that long, do we?

Easy fix. Just change the name from 'Galactic Year' to 'Astro Year'. Still fits in with the game.
