Do advanced minerals/gases spawn on certain planets or in certain areas? I'm trying to graduate from basic extractors and cargo modules to the advanced ones and I don't even know where these minerals spawn, let alone where to get some.

advanced vs normal mining facilities:

there is no "advanced" vs "normal" deposits, it's just that the former type of facility is more effective than the latter. However, Specialized can only mine common minerals, which of course our "friends" the mining 'experts' will gladly tell you about

I just meant materials that are harder to find like Radon or taenite (which is really cheap considering how hard it is to find)

yeah. For Radon and Diamonds, both types of mods will do. The only time it matters is if you're using a Specialised, which can only mine relatively common deposits.

I think my original question got lost in the sauce there. I'm trying to gather resources for advanced and specialized harvesters but I'm having difficulty finding the ingredients. Is there any rhyme or reason to what planets spawn what materials or is it just a question of exploring and surveying everything until I find what I need?

According to SirEmi himself (http://forum.astro-galaxy.com/index.php/topic,8370.0.html):

small planets / moons have a higher probability to contain rare resources, so scan those first then deciding where to start mining a star ...
