The Bridge->System on the left menu shows the planetary system of the star the ship is orbiting.
Planets can have different type, environments, sizes and resources.

Gas giant planets
Very big planets but not dense, formed mostly from gases. Ships can not land on a gas planets, and only atmospheric harvester modules can be deployed on it. The are no minerals, but massive amounts of gas deposits. Very rarely seen as moons, because the moons are usually small and rocky.

Rocky planets
Usually small with a dense core. On rare occasions, a super-Earth planet can be found, those planets are as big as a gas giant but rocky. The super-Earth planet is especially valuable as it usually contains a lot of area space to deploy modules and lots of resource deposits, and is great for corporation headquarters.

Rocky planets can have different environments, that will affect what resources can be found on it. Barren planets have no atmosphere, thus there will be no gas deposits and only minerals. Terran environments are only found within the star's habitability zone, that is usually at around 30% the distance from the star and up to 60%.

Asteroid belts
Formed from leftover remains from the formation of the system, there is no atmosphere and thus no gas resources. A lot of surface space and rich mineral deposits, but due to the unstable orbits and collision risk, only mining facility modules can be deployed on it.

Surface area
The planet / moon / belt surface area indicates how big it is. A bigger surface area enables more modules to be deployed, and more resource deposits are usually present. Also the planet shows bigger in the system view.
