As it stand, we'll soon have a problem: pirates are gaining in strength and soon it'll be impossible for a new player to establish stations as the pirates would be way stronger. However, rather than imposing resrictions on combat, a simple fix would be to make corp members fight together if they're in the same orbit.

This way, stronger players can shelter new ones. Pirates can coordinate raid to take down big targets. And I don't know how your code's working, but it shouldn't be too difficult to change the test from "Does that ship belong to a fighting player" from "Does that ship belong to a fighting corporation"

A really good idea Sheb,

It could also provide a good incentive for players to work together, or to at least establish common player bases. Players from the same corp could then mine a asteroid belt together, with a single station in orbit for protection, or harvest from a large gass giant.

eventually I could even see it go a step further down the line, with corporations being able to define alliances, and allied corps all fighting together.

Yup. As it stand, being a member of a corp bring really minor advantages. Alliance would be ready neat too, we could see the start of mercenary corp offering protection service.

As I pirate, I agree. It's way too easy for me to take out weaker ships and stations/bases. The challenge would be most welcome. The hunter becomes the prey. Nice!

As far as we're discussing piracy, what do you think of the safe zone near each system? Shouldn't they be removed? As things stand, they make any anti-piracy operation night-on impossible. But they also protect people that park their ships there....

I dont think there should be any safe zones at all. Except perhapes Earth Orbit, and other SOL protected zones. As i mentioned in a suggestion ( Criminal Records ) these should then be restricted to only non-pirates.

That way we could actually hunt down pirates, or at least there is a chance we could find them occasionally as we fly around and then take some revenge. Space is hugh so currently hunting for them is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

If Corp members fought together then that would make Corp 'gather points' like a safe zone as well.

This is part of the corporation combat system including corporation ships.

The thing is the Corp members may not always want to be a part of combat, so they will probably have an option in corporation room where they will check if they want to help other corp members during combat. I don't want to trow them into combat if they don't choose to.

Also, the corp will have it's own ships that can be assigned to different members. If those members opted to help in corporation combat, then they will be able to help other corp members using the corp ships and their own ships...

Actually, even now, a ship-by-ship division would be nice, so we can order freigther to stay behind while our armed ship fight. Maybe even make it so that if someone attack a freighter, he may retreat behind the cruiser and let it handle the fight.

I'm open to any modifications that will balance the game concerning piracy. We're all here to have fun. Also you legit corps should hire pirates to errr.....negotiate with rival corps. ;) and for protection. Could  make for some interesting game play.

Yup, totally. Which is way we need way to transfer money, and way to fight as allied corps.

I'd like to make my point for the suppression of safe zone. It creates an imbalance between pirates and miners because miners have to have assets open for attack at all time, while pirates only are open to attack while they're online and raiding (Which of course mean they can jump out of the system).

Safe havens shouldn't be absolute. Safe havens should be planets with large defense stations, not some gamey stuff. How cool would it be to have pirates havens? War and safezones? It could be good to give some kind of defensive bonus to stations too, to help this happens.

Erm, stations and Planets already get a pretty decent fortification bonus.

Believe me if the staion is well defended it makes attacking it a real touch and go concern. Ive lost several battles recently against stations that on paper in terms of power i was clearly way ahead.

The first shot can be a deciding factor and in station/planet comabt thats a 50/50 toss up.

Then you have the massive variability in terms of damage that your weapons inflict, a few light shots and your in big trouble.
