First time it ever happen to me. I just took a COM mission:

Ship crew: combat contract (Talk) TRL 14112->Alpha TRL 14112

and  TRL 14112 is not visible on screen (I have VIP and all officers)

The system is in quadrant 2,2.  It is likely just past the edge of your nav screen.  It is rare for this to happen but it has happened to me before.

I could happen... the system for the Com mission should be in the same quadrant, but there's a remote chance it could be just over the edge of the radar.

The star maps & navigation should come in handy with that, once you will be able to navigate the star maps and examine all data gathered by the ships...

I turned around at a distace of 5 ly and found it. It was just past 16 ly.
