I'll go ahead and give an example of what I have in mind... it's just one example of an exploration / combat site.

You find a wormhole in space and jump through it. On the other side you are into unknown space, a quadrant far far away...

You look around the nav computer and spot a star nearby... Jump there and start to explore the planets / moons. At a moon you spot a derelict station in orbit... The station is just a mere satellite outpost, but upon close inspection, you find a sealed capsule with writing on it... removing the capsule from it's spot triggers a self-destruct mechanism on the satellite.

After some debate among your scientists, they are pretty sure the devise is a key/tracer to an alien research facility.

You now have two choices:

1.) Return to Earth and sell the capsule for nice solars
2.) Follow the trail to the secret alien installation

The facility is in deep space so you proceed to the indicated coordinates. When you get there, you have to use the capsule to reveal a cloaked area of space. Upon revealing the cloaked bubble, you notice the facility is actually the size of a small moon, in deep space. Robotic defenses all around... You attack the facility and finally manage to get to it's cargo bay to find inside... an alien death ray weapon, that bypasses shields / armor and does 1000 damage to crew directly...

Your scientists tell you that it seems the site was a top secret alien facility... that maybe the aliens are nowhere to be found because they used that weapon and destroyed themselves... or maybe not 1

Sounds interesting. Hope the wormhole is a 2 way thing to get back to normal space. [IMG] stand ready with her fleet carriers to investigate and pursue all alien sightings and defend against all hostile actions from them if they have any sights on our part of space ;)
And we certainly don't want any of those "death ray thingies" getting into the wrong hands. Children shouldn't play with deadly weaponry haha

Kid: lookie mommy!  A toy gun.

Zaaaaaaaap!!!!

Kid: Mommy where did you go.

Moral of the story. Don't let your kids get ahold of these laser guns. Hand them over to a responsible corperation instead. We promise we are not greedy and will not use them for personal reasons. *crosses fingers behind back*

Yeah wormholes will go two ways, but you gotta keep a watch on them, as they will dissipate in time. Warning and countdown will be in wormhole local, so you probably will need to post a scout there if you're going far away and don't want to miss the closing window.

Of course even if you get stranded, you can search for another wormhole back, once the one you came trough closes, usually it open in another parts of the quadrant or cluster of quadrants, if you're in alien territory.

Well if deep space past ring 4 is added on to then these here could be fun.  We could actually build us ships ment for exploration.

Space... the Final Frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before.

That's the idea... I don't want to say too much to spoil it, but there will pockets of quadrants just as you see pockets of stars. Of course you could go the long way without the wormhole, but that would be a loooong voyage, better take the shortcut trough the wormhole laugh
