I think they are generally wormholes, but they can be various other things too, like blackholes. Im no expert though.

They're 2-way wormholes.  Remain stable around 2-weeks, and give only 2-day's warning before collapse.

In the System view, click on the feature around 3/4 to the upper left, and engage like you would to any planet.  Once you get there, click on it again, and say Yes when asked if you want to enter the anomaly (or whatever the exact wording is).  On the other side, visit first the Navigate menu, then Star Maps, or it won't be logged correctly as visited in the Star Map view.

Other stuff was planned but never implemented.  So, no backholes, visitable super-nova remnants, space monsters, etc.
